I watched the premiere of Stargate Atlantis over the weekend. Overall, I liked the show. Some comments, in no particular order:
- I think it definitely has potential to be a great show, but it could go either way. If it is just a rehash of Stargate SG-1, just set in a different galaxy, I don’t think it will be that hot. I would personally like to see a more arc-driven show than SG-1, similar to Babylon 5 or Buffy, The Vampire Slayer
- I think it was way too soon to actually see the Wraiths. As it is, there is no real mystery – they just look like another foe to be fought. I would have preferred it if there was some buildup over the course of the season, with maybe finally seeing them in the finale. Something similar to the way Bablyon 5 handled the Shadows would have been perfect.
- I like the characters of Major Sheppard, Doctor Weir, and Doctor McKay, but they have a way to go to match the chemistry of the SG-1 team. I definitely didn’t like Dr. Beckett. Didn’t mind the accent, but the character just seemed to grate on me.
- I think Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O’Neill) and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) stole the first part of the premiere. They definitely overshadowed the newcomers.
- I hope some real work is made on continuity, i.e. that we see the Atlantis’ team Earth-created supplies and equipment dwindle, that there isn’t an endless number of team members, etc. I think that one of the things that would really kill the series for me would be something like Star Trek:Voyager‘s endless shuttle supply.
- Favorite quote: “See, now that was a waste of a perfectly good explanation.” Typical Jack O’Neill.
As I said above, I liked the premiere. I don’t think it is as good as SG-1, but it could get there. The jury is still out, though.
