The first thing I notice about any fanfic is the language. Nothing turns me off a fic faster than poor grammar and spelling. Examples: Using “looser” for “loser”, “they’re” instead of “their” (and vice versa), “then” as opposed to “than”, etc. Harry Potter & the Heir of the Ancients doesn’t have any sort of problem like that – it is very well written from the viewpoint of grammar and spelling. It is certainly better written than any of my posts on this site. I still have major problems with this fic, though.

The chief problem I have with Harry Potter & the Heir of the Ancients is the plot. In my humble opinion, the fic is a Mary Sue, with Harry as the perfect character…a “Harry” Sue, if you will.

Just some examples of things that I disliked (spoilers ahead):

• Harry isn’t the heir of Godric Gryffindor or Merlin. He is the heir of the person who taught them, making him their peer.
• Not only does his magical power increase greatly, he becomes smarter, making him the equal of Hermione. He also gets accelerated healing, enhanced senses and enhanced strength.
• Harry gets a magical, expanded trunk with a vast library. Time passes six times faster inside it, but he doesn’t age while in it, allowing him nearly unlimited time to study and practice.
• Harry inherits the Potter estates, which are worth 93 billion pounds. I’m not sure what the current exchange rate is, but that is in the neighborhood of 150 billlion US dollars. That makes Harry the richest person on Earth, three times over.
• He gets a magic amulet, allowing him to get around the underage magic restrictions.
• The fic is Harry/Hermione. I have nothing wrong with that; it is my preferred ship, after all. However, instead of actually showing us Harry and Hermione getting together, Hermione sends him a letter spelling out her feelings for him. While this isn’t Mary Sue-ish in nature, I found it rather boring and definitely lacking in dynamic tension.

The only reason I didn’t rate Harry Potter & the Heir of the Ancients as a T (Terrible) is because it is so well written from a grammar and spelling viewpoint. I am rating it as P (Poor) and do not recommend reading it.
